My friend Diane’s iBook was suffering from a severe case of “hard drive too small” so I offered to replace it with a bigger one. Of course I only found out later that with this particular type of iBook it was extremely difficult to replace the hard drive. I had to remove 50 screws and basically the whole outer shell to access the hard drive. At that point the replacement was easy and putting the whole thing togethere again was also not too hard. I only lost one tiny screw in the process. You can see I glued them to a strip of tape in the left of the photo. On my Powerbook are the instructions, downloaded from the Internet. I couldn’t have done it without those.
Putting her files back was also a bit of a hassle, since the external drive that I had copied them onto didn’t want to boot. So I had to do it through my Powerbook with the iBook mounted in FireWire disk mode. But in the end, after quite a bit of time it was done, and we could enjoy a nice meal in a Portugese restaurant.
